The brand's inception came with Mya's inheritance of the responsibility to safeguard the future of Laka Morton's paintings. Mya's artistic journey began with acrylic painting and evolved into graphic design and digital artwork. Initially, Welina operated as a small business selling prints and t-shirts, but Mya's passion soon drove her ambition to establish a full-fledged aloha wear brand.

With the support of her father, George Akana, Mya was introduced to a brand developer in Honolulu. This connection led to her attendance at the LA textile shows, where she successfully secured a partnership with her future fabric manufacturer. Since then, Welina has been in the incubation phase, meticulously preparing for its next chapter as a professional aloha wear brand that embodies the spirit of Hawaii.

At 19 years old, Mya currently serves as an Aloha Ambassador at the prestigious Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, showcasing her dedication to Hawaiian culture and hospitality. Her commitment to professional growth is evident through her achievement of a Certificate of Completion issued by YWCA Oʻahu & Patsy T. Mink Center for Business & Leadership. This certification has equipped Mya with valuable skills in business management and leadership, further strengthening her ability to guide Welina towards success in the competitive aloha wear market.
